Getting your teeth whitened professionally is a great way to give yourself a fabulous smile. But have you wondered what you can do to keep your teeth looking great? You wouldn’t want to do things that would take away your shiny new look, right?
In this blog, David Jin, DDS, at A Beautiful Smile Dentistry discusses what you should and shouldn’t do to keep your smile dazzling for as long as possible.
Avoid beverages that stain
Certain beverages can cause serious stains on your teeth. The beverages that cause the most problems include red wine, coffee, black tea, and certain juices, such as cranberry and tomato.
If you can’t part with your morning cup of joe or nightly glass of red wine, there’s a solution. Try drinking them with a straw. This can minimize contact the beverages have with your teeth.
Avoid foods that stain
Just like beverages, some foods can stain your teeth more than others. These include tomato sauce, balsamic vinegar, blueberries, yellow mustard, candy, beets, and grapes. Anything acidic can also weaken the enamel on your teeth. Try to limit your consumption of these foods, and try to eliminate them entirely for the first 24 hours after your procedure.
Nothing stains teeth faster or more distinctively than smoking cigarettes. If you’re getting your teeth whitened because of the effects of smoking, you should know that your results can fade quickly if you continue smoking. Furthermore, not smoking will make you healthier overall, too.
Whenever you can, drink water instead of other beverages. Water is a natural tooth cleaner, and it won’t stain your teeth like other beverages. In fact, drinking water after eating can help your teeth, because water causes your body to produce saliva, which helps break down plaque.
Care for your teeth
Brush and floss at least twice a day. In addition, make sure you keep your regular appointments with Dr. Jin to get plaque buildup removed.
